I started this journey by saying I would teach C1 to read. She seemed ready, and I figured if we were successful, I could feel confident in doing more. She was not quite 4. We used:
LeapFrog Letter Factory and Talking Words Factory DVDs
Starfall.com
Progressive Phonics
I looked into several books about how to teach reading, but it all seemed so formal and these were working well. I added:
Explode The Code Primers (which turned out to be too easy for her.)
Everything was going great, and we were thrilled with her progress. I started researching more about homeschooling and curriculum options. I started checking stuff out from the library. I became interested in Moving Beyond The Page and Five In A Row. I checked out Peak With Books and Five In A Row Vol. 1 from the library. FIAR seemed like a great fit for us at this young age, so we dove right in while it was on loan. Love it! I picked up my own manuals at the local homeschool convention.
I did TONS of research before shopping the convention, and added a bunch more things:
Five In A Row
All About Spelling Level 1
WriteShop Primary A
Artistic Pursuits (The Way They See It)
RightStart AL Abacus and “Yellow Is The Sun”
Explode the Code (level 1)
miscellaneous science
We fit stuff in here and there throughout the day, not pushing anything very hard. I have a rough schedule, but we don't always get to everything, and sometimes she wants more. In any case, C1 is only 4, and I really want her to have fun and love it!
